in thousands of buildings in virginia, maryland, ohio, and kentucky. a worker first noticed the problem back in june. the pipes were installed in about 28,000 buildings. the company spokesperson says the pipes had thinner walls that don't make pipes more vulnerable to failure, but could shorten life spans. massive natural gas explosion -- authorities were trying to figure out what caused that accident. >>> new plan for a multistate power line is in the hands of virginia regulators tonight. the potomac appalachian transmission high line or path would run 275 miles from west virginia to camp town, maryland. 31 miles of it would be in virginia. supporters say the line is needed to help our region stress power grid. critics say it would only serve to continue the use of coal to generate electricity. >>> time for a check on the evening rush hour. patranya is in the 9news now traffic center. >> we still can't break the delays you are seeing from the toll road all the way up to the 270 spur. still tracking all those brake lights for you. no accidents that i'm seeing out there, just a lot of volume

, unfortunately things have gotten ugly very quickly on the beltway in virginia. live pictes of the inner loop beginning at route 50, arlington boulevard. it is at a stand still. multicar crash inner loop of the beltway just above i6. right side of the roadway and left side of the roadway are blocked. not only will i affect traffic to the beltway, it will jam things up on 66 trying to get on to or beyond 495. so heads-up for that. we'll keep you updated. southeast still dealing with the accident, pennsylvania and branch avenues. very little traff getting by at this hour. but the progresss being made. we'll keep a watch on that. out to the rails we go. met metro, vre, camden, 6 minutes behind schedule. >> thanks very much. a developing story in afghanistan. nine service members were killed in a helicopter crash. nato says two others were killed in the crash including a u.s. tizen. an official says the chopper went down in northwestern afghanistan. the cause of the crash is being investigated but nato says there were no reports of enemy fire in the area. e deaths bring the number of internationa

frederick county, maryland down to parts of northern virginia. on live doppler 9000 hd, i have zoomed in to loudoun, northern prince william counties. you can see it there. west of fairfax county. i need doppler, please, control room. you can see on route 50, 6:59, out of 234, if you keep going north, west of dulles and heavy rain. these are torrential downpours and they are out to upperville. northern faulkier in to loudoun right now, maybe eastern frederick, virginia seeing the heaviest of the rain. we will continue to watch that. the temperatures this morning in this tropical air mass are in the upper 60s to low 70s and with a good jumping point i think it will be a warm afternoon. especially since we will get sunshine out here. mid-70s by 9:00. showers an but as we head to the middle of the day and this afternoon, more sunshine, breezy and warm, upper 70s to maybe even 85 for a high. we'll talk about more rain coming by thursday. it is 5:01 and that means it is time for traffic. >> thank you, howard. good morning, everybody. overall not a bad start to our tuesday morning co

in almost 100 years, virginia has put a woman to death. 41-year-old teresa lewis was convicted in 2002 of hiring the two men who killed her husband and stepsoin an elaborate scam to collect insurance money. >>> the fire described three homes in the 8300 block of tillup loop in manassas. jane has more. >> reporter: eight homes were damaged or destroyed as strong winds whipped the massive blaze through a row of single-family homes. an upscale neighborhood turns into a fiery inferno as strong winds cause fles to jump from roof to roof. amateur video shows a fast-moving blaze as firefighters struggle to get control and neighbors start to panic. >> it was only ten minute before all of these went up. it was really, really horrific. i said, you kw, i need to pack some things and get out of he. i knew how close we were and seeing how fast it happened. it was pretty bad. >> reporter: witnesses say the fireroke out in the back of 8355 tillut loop. the heatrom the fire caused vinyl siding on three homes to melt. one neighbor ran or to door to make sure everyone made it out okay. >> i ran to the g

about why a northern virginia man may have staged a violent incident at johns hopkin hospital in baltimore. it turns out the gunman was likely distraught over his mother's condition gentleman the incident began at the hospital around 11:00 yesterday morning. the gunman and his mother are said to be from arlington. police say paul warren pardus pulled a gun and shot his mother's doctor while the surgeon updated him on his mother's condition. pardus barricaded himself in his mother's eighth floor hospital room killing his mother and then himself. for more than two hours, no one knew what was happening inside. >> my boss came running in and he told me exactly what happened, that there was a guy running around with a gun and to stay put. it was scary just knowing that machine -- someone is on the outside on a rampage with a gun in a hospital where we're supposed to be protected. >> reporter: police had originally identified par stay with us -- pardus as warren davis but he says he changed his name. >>> four metro access drivers accused of sexual assaults against disabled customer

is okay from t 5 past 270. live conditions here at university. virginia 66 heading eastbound tracking the trip, as well. everything is good from centreville past 50 to the capital beltway. as we take you over to 395 northbound, lanes are wide open. no issues to report making your way from t 5 past shirlington and beyond. back to you. >>> campaign 2010 in the district has led to a new mayor. voters ousted mayor fenty in the democratic primary in favor of city council chairman vincent gray. with 90% of precincts reporting gray leads with 53% of the vote to fenty's 48%. -- 46%. chris fin fisher is live with more. >> this race wasn't called until 2:00 this morning. and gray didn't even give his tip stance speech until a half hour later. so this is a very, very late night for even involved from all the campaign workers here at the headquarters to the campaign itself. vince gray took the stage at 2:30 this morning. this victory virtually assures that gray will be the city's next mayor. after all he has no republican challengers and fenty previously said he will not be a write in candidate.

are seeing a problem in virginia, 395 southbound right now at route one, a pretty bad accident here. all lanes taken away except the right so there will be traffic heading up to that spot so let's take our live shot here on 395 you can see volume. looks like it's moving a little bit better now than when i was watching five minutes ago so slow from washington boulevard down to the scene. moving onto 270, it's going to be looking nice out there as we move onto our mdot camera. german town to clarksburg. everyone moving at speed. mom and dad should be home in no time on this route. travel times for you and some of the spots still bogging travelers down, 66 still can't break this, close to 20 minutes from 495 to 7100. on the inner loop looks like it's getting better, 12 minutes from 270 over to i-95 in montgomery county. back to you. >>> topper shutt is here with the forecast. >> rain is a strong word. we do have a chance for some showers coming up not tonight, though. in fact here's your forecast first. tonight if you want to go out, fine. in fact, quite spectacular out here. here's your fo
